Incense for Stress: Does It Really Work?

Have you noticed how everyone seems to be selling incense these days?
Wellness brands sell it.
Homeware stores sell it.
Yoga studios burn it.
Meditation spaces use it.
Even brands that had nothing to do with incense a few years ago suddenly have their own.
Why?
Part of the answer is cultural.
For thousands of years, burning incense has been connected with religion, ceremony, meditation, prayer and private ritual. Across cultures, lighting incense often marks a transition — from ordinary time into something quieter, more intentional and more personal.
There is also something strangely captivating about watching incense burn.
The smoke has no fixed form. It rises, moves, disappears and reforms. Your eyes naturally follow it. The ritual itself asks you to slow down for a moment.
But there is another part of the story that is much less visible.
The scent.
And once we start looking at what scent actually does in the brain, incense becomes much more interesting than simply “something that smells nice.”
Your Nose Has a Different Relationship With Your Brain
Smell is neurologically unusual.
When we see, hear or touch something, sensory information travels through a series of
processing systems before becoming part of our conscious experience.
Olfaction follows a distinctive route.
Odour molecules activate receptors inside the nose. That information travels to the olfactory bulb and onward into primary olfactory areas that are closely connected with regions involved in emotion and memory.
One of those regions is the amygdala, deeply involved in emotional processing.
Another is the hippocampal system, essential to memory formation and retrieval.
Researchers at Northwestern University compared the functional connection between the hippocampus and different human sensory systems — vision, hearing, touch and smell.
Their finding was remarkable:
Olfactory areas showed stronger functional connectivity with the hippocampus than the other sensory systems they examined.
The researchers described olfaction as retaining unusually direct access to hippocampal memory networks.
In other words, smell doesn't simply tell the brain:
“There is a scent in the room.”
It enters a neural system intimately connected with how we remember, associate and emotionally interpret our environment.
That helps explain why scent can feel so immediate.
Sometimes you react before you have consciously decided what you think about the smell.
So Can Scent Actually Affect Stress?
This is where things get interesting.
Researchers have spent years studying how aromatic compounds and inhaled aromas may influence stress, anxiety, mood and sleep.
A 2023 systematic review examined 76 clinical studies involving more than 6,500 participants. More than 70% of the studies reported a positive effect on anxiety in groups receiving inhalation aromatherapy compared with controls. Some studies also measured physiological markers such as salivary cortisol.
But the researchers also pointed out important limitations: studies varied substantially, safety information was often incomplete, and the exact plant species and dosages were not always well reported.
Research into sleep has produced similarly interesting results. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses have found improvements in reported sleep quality in a number of aromatherapy studies, although study designs and interventions vary considerably.
So no — science does not tell us that smelling something pleasant automatically “switches off stress.”
And incense is not medicine.
But the bigger point is difficult to ignore:
What we smell is part of the information our brain is constantly receiving from our environment.
And that sensory information can interact with systems involved in emotion, memory, stress perception and sleep.
But There Is a Problem.
If scent matters, then there is a question we probably don't ask often enough.
What exactly are you smelling?
Or perhaps more importantly:
What exactly are you burning?
Because not everything sold as incense is made in the same way.
And this is where the conversation needs to move beyond whether something simply “smells good.”
Incense Is Not Just Perfume on a Stick
Traditionally, aromatic materials themselves can create the fragrance of incense.
Woods.
Resins.
Herbs.
Flowers.
Spices.
The raw materials already have their own aromatic identities.
They can be ground, combined, rested and matured so that individual ingredients gradually become part of one composition.
In this approach, the fragrance is not simply something applied at the end.
The material is the fragrance.
That distinction matters.
Because today, incense can also be made from a combustible base to which fragrance is added.
That fragrance may come from essential oils.
It may come from fragrance compounds.
Or it may involve combinations of both.
Essential oils and synthetic fragrances should not be treated as the same thing. They are chemically and materially different.
But from the perspective of incense making, they raise a similar question:
Is the aroma coming primarily from the aromatic materials themselves — or has aroma been added to a base designed to burn?
Those are two very different philosophies of incense.
And Then There Is Fire.
This is the part people often forget.
Perfume sits on your skin.
A room spray disperses into the air.
An essential-oil diffuser volatilises aromatic compounds without burning an entire incense stick.
Incense is different.
You set it on fire.
And combustion changes chemistry.
Once organic materials are burned, the resulting air contains more than the aromatic molecules that originally created the fragrance.
Studies analysing incense smoke have identified fine and ultrafine particulate matter as well as a range of gaseous and organic combustion products. Researchers have also found that emissions vary substantially depending on the composition and type of incense being burned.
A more recent residential study conducted in a California home found measurable PM2.5 and complex organic aerosols during incense burning, with significant differences between incense types.
This is important because it prevents us from making an equally misleading claim in the opposite direction:
“Natural incense means healthy smoke.”
That isn't scientifically responsible either.
Wood is natural.
Resin is natural.
Herbs are natural.
But once something burns, combustion produces particles and new chemical compounds.
Natural does not mean invisible to your lungs.
Which is exactly why we think the ingredients of incense deserve more attention — not less.
If You Burn It, You Should Know What's In It.
Think about it.
We increasingly read the ingredients in our food.
We check what goes onto our skin.
We question what is inside cleaning products.
We care about the materials touching our bodies.
Yet when it comes to incense, something we intentionally ignite inside the space where we breathe, many of us choose almost entirely by one criterion:
Does it smell good?
Maybe that isn't enough.
If fragrance has been added, what is it?
What creates the scent?
What creates the combustible base?
What binders are being used?
What materials are actually burning?
These questions matter because studies of incense combustion show that both ventilation and the composition of the incense influence what remains in indoor air.
Where Does the Smoke Go?
Watch incense smoke for long enough and it seems to disappear.
But it doesn't simply cease to exist.
Smoke contains gases and suspended particles. Those particles disperse through the room, some remain airborne, some are removed through ventilation, and some deposit onto indoor surfaces.
Experimental research on incense and candle combustion has specifically observed that ventilation and surface interactions influence how volatile compounds decline after burning, while particles can remain and deposit over time.
If you regularly burn incense in the same place, you may eventually notice residue or discolouration around nearby surfaces.
That visible residue is a useful reminder of something very simple:
Burning is a physical process.
What you burn becomes part of your environment.
So ingredient transparency shouldn't be considered an optional luxury in incense.
It should be part of the conversation.
Real Incense Begins With the Material
There is another way to think about incense.
Instead of asking:
“What fragrance should we make?”
Start with:
“What material are we working with?”
Agarwood.
Sandalwood.
Resins.
Flowers.
Herbs.
Spices.
Each material already carries its own aromatic profile.
Then comes proportion.
Blending.
Grinding.
Resting.
Maturation.
Time.
In traditional material-led incense making, the objective is not necessarily to create the loudest fragrance possible.
It is to allow different aromatic materials to become one scent.
There is an enormous difference between:
adding a smell, and building a scent from materials that already smell.
You may not recognise that difference by reading the words sandalwood, rose or agarwood on a package.
But your nose often knows when something is different.
So, Does Incense Really Work for Stress?
The answer is more interesting than yes or no.
Research gives us good reason to take smell seriously.
Olfaction has an unusually close relationship with brain systems involved in memory and emotion. Research into inhaled aromas suggests that certain olfactory experiences may influence perceived stress, anxiety and sleep, although results depend on the aroma, individual, context and study design.
Then incense adds something else.
There is scent.
There is ritual.
There is fire.
There is the visual movement of smoke.
There is repetition.
There is the transformation of a space.
And there is the moment when you stop whatever you were doing to light it.
Perhaps that is why humans have continued burning aromatic materials for thousands of years.
Not because incense is a magic switch for the brain.
And certainly not because smoke itself should be considered therapeutic.
But because our environment affects our internal state.
What we see matters.
What we hear matters.
What we smell matters.
And the rituals we repeat can become part of how we recognise that it is time to work, meditate, rest — or simply stop.
So perhaps the real question is no longer:
Does incense work?
The better question might be:
If scent matters to your brain, what are you choosing to burn?

These studies do not demonstrate that incense is a medical treatment for stress, anxiety, depression or insomnia. They help us understand something more fundamental: smell interacts with the brain, and burning materials changes the air around us. Both deserve to be understood.
